A Brief History of Morgan Hill

In 2008, Morgan Hill was officially recognized as a city in California. Prior to its recognition, the area now known as Morgan Hill had been home to many Native American tribes for centuries. In 1777, Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded nearby, which brought Anglo-European settlers during the California Gold Rush and beyond. After the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, several survivors chose to settle in the valleys of what became Morgan Hill. Agriculture was an important early industry in the area, with cherries and apricots being grown extensively.

During World War II, South Bay Industries was located in Morgan Hill and provided jobs for thousands of people. After the war ended, Gould Motors Corporation opened its manufacturing plant on Tennant Avenue; it closed down in 1993 due to economic difficulties but continued as an automotive yard until 2021 when it was transformed into a tech hub. Nowadays, Morgan Hill is renowned for its wine production and a multitude of festivities held throughout the year celebrating local cultures such as Taste Morgan Hill, the Mushroom Mardi Gras Parade and Festival, and Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Cowboy’s Festival).
